A bowler known for clocking high speeds on the field and better known as the Rawalpindi Express, Shoaib Akhtar is in the news yet again. As soon as the eagerly anticipated Pakistan Super League was launched the speedster made it absolutely clear that he was interested in owning an outfit.
He met with PSL project head Najam Sethi a day after the logo launching ceremony of PSL. While taking to media after the meeting he stated that by buying a franchise he wanted to groom the youngsters and help Pakistan cricket in general. He added “I am interested in buying a team in the league and want to serve Pakistan cricket this way by promoting cricketers and making more Shoaib Akhtars who can bowl at 100 (mph). My business partner and I are testing the waters; assessing whatever is put on table and how it suits us.” (ESPN Cricinfo)
Speaking specifically about tainted spot fixing pace bowler Mohammad Amir he was adamant that under his guidance Amir could regain his form and flare and represent Pakistan once again. So it’s pretty much clear Amir will be in the mix of things if Shoaib Akhtar is able to cinch the deal with the PSL authorities.
Shedding light on his plans of how he will be building the team Akhtar stated that he will bring up young talent and only deserving players will be a part of his setup as merit will be utmost priority in the franchise and its matters.
Shoaib Akhtar might well be a controversial figure to some but he can definitely attract a lot of players and fans for the sake of PSL and judging by his statements and keen interest, I won’t be surprised if he pulls this of and lands a team in PSL.
