Quetta Gladiators, the two-time runner-ups will be aiming for the gold this time around. The Men in Purple have been consistent under the leadership of Pakistan’s captain across all three formats of the game, Sarfraz Ahmed. They performed brilliantly in the first two seasons, losing just three and four matches out of seven and five matches respectively.
The equation will probably be a little different for Gladiators as they will be playing without their star player, Kevin Petersen, who has been the highest scorer for the side. The experienced Englishman was an integral part of their line-up, however, the team’s local players have performed well in the previous seasons, which has been the secret of their success.
Though they are missing their destructive middle-order English batsman, their Quetta Gladiators’ squad looks stronger for the fourth season of the Pakistan Super League. Sarfraz Ahmed has still got the services of South Africa’s dynamic left-handed batsman, Riley Russow, who was superb during PSL 2018, he will be once again a force to reckon for the team in the upcoming season.
Moreover, Gladiators have a much experienced and effective bowling line up for the PSL 2019. They have roped in the mysterious Windies spinner, Sunil Narine from Lahore Qalandars, he has the reputation of being a T20 specialist and is regarded highly all around the world. On the other hand, they have also got Pakistan’s experienced and T20 specialist pacer Sohail Tanvir from Multan Sultans. The duo has all the varieties needed in the shortest format of the game and both can be handy with the bat as well. Narine opened the inning for Qalandars in the previous season and was quite effective during the powerplays. Whereas, Tanvir can be a useful finisher down the order.
Furthermore, they have got back their opening batsman, Ahmed Shehzad, who has done impressively for the side in the first two seasons. In the third edition, Shehzad played for the debutantes, Multan Sultans, who failed to create much of an impact during the event. However, his experience and talent will come handy for the side in the top order. Moreover, they have also included the aggressive middle-order batsman Umar Akmal in the side. His inconsistency will be a concern for the Gladiators’ management, however, if he gets going, he is nearly impossible to stop. He was also the highest scorer of the PSL 2 while playing for Lahore Qalandars. The pair of Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal has always been rated extremely high in terms of talent, but they usually misfire.
Quetta Gladiators have a well-balanced line-up with potential all-rounders. Shane Watson, at the top of the order, gives his team an edge. He is a delightful stroke-maker, he is effective both against the pace attack as well as against the slower bowlers. Moreover, he has the tendency of playing long innings. They have another new entrant, the Champion DJ Bravo in the ranks. The man is an asset for any T20 side of the world. He has won two T20 World Cups for the West Indies. He can be phenomenal in death overs. He can bowl perfect yorkers and deceiving slower ones in the proceedings. He is one of the better finishers of the cricketing world. Gladiators will be ecstatic to have him in the team.
Sarfraz Ahmed will be hoping to break the jinx this time and finally clinch the trophy for Quetta Gladiators’ fans. They have all the ingredients to achieve the feat, it is just a bit of luck that they want on their side. All the sides of the Pakistan Super League are well equipped and the contests are expected to be mouthwatering.
