Power hitting Windies opener Andre Fletcher has been ruled out of the rest of the ongoing World T20 tournament due to an hamstring injury which he suffered during the match against Afghanistan last Sunday.
West Indies team manager told Press Trust of India that Fletcher has been sent back home and Lendl Simmons will replace him in the squad for the semifinal against India in Mumbai on Thursday.
“Simmons will join the squad and Andre Fletcher has gone back home,” West Indies team’s media manager told PTI on the sidelines of a practice session at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai.
Simmons has regularly featured in the Indian Premier League and has ample amount of experience playing for the Mumbai Indians so he knows a thing or two about playing in these conditions so he should settle in rather easily.
Simmons has played 34 T20I matches for the Caribbean side and averages a healthy 25.36 which is decent enough in accordance with T20 standards. He strikes at a rate around 114 and holds 4 fifties to his credit in the shortest format of the game.
The first semifinal of the ongoing World T20 in India will be played between England and New Zealand tonight in Kolkata while the second semifinal will be played tomorrow between hosts India and the spirited West Indies side.
