‘I had confidence in Paul’ – Hope on his match-winning 146*

Centurian Shai Hope had all praises for Keemo Paul for supporting him as the duo provided a solid 71-run stand to Windies which helped in defeating Bangladesh by four-wicket at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, Bangladesh on Wednesday.

He said that Paul is capable of batting and he played really well today. “We know Keemo has very good batting ability,” he said.

Hope smashed unbeaten 146 runs off 144 balls in a situation when Windies were struggling at 185/6 while chasing 266 runs.

Bangladesh while batting first posted 255-7 in 50 overs with Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan scoring half centuries.

Oshane Thomas of Windies took three wickets conceding 54 runs while Keemo Paul, Devendra Bishoo and Rovman Powell bagged one wicket each.

In reply, Windies posted 50-run partnerships for the second and third wicket in their chase, it was Hope doing most of the scoring.

Paul had winning runs for Windies as he scored 18 runs in last part of the inning which gave a breath to his partner Hope who watched wickets falling from the other hand.

Hope was quick to add their plan was to rotate the strike as much as possible to release pressure from them. “I had full confidence in him. We just tried to rotate as best as possible,” he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that it was Hope’s third one-day international century which he coined a unique one for him.

He said that on the other two occasions, against Zimbabwe in 2016 and India in October, the matches ended in a tie.

“This one is unique for me because this time we won the match,” he said.

This is Windies’ first win in their ongoing tour of Bangladesh as earlier they lost the Test series 2-0 and the first ODI by five wickets. Now both the teams will face each other in the series decider contest on Friday.
