Multan Sultans register their first win of the PSL 2019 as they defeated the reigning champions Islamabad United by five wickets in a low-scoring contest on Saturday at Dubai.
In pursue of Islamabad United’s moderate total of 125 runs, Multan Sultans had a shaky start, losing three wickets for just 43 runs. In the pressure situation, it was once again the experienced Shoaib Malik, who rescued his team.
The skipper was supported by Hammad Azam and Andre Russell with 14 and 16 runs respectively. The match entered a critical phase, but the seasoned duo of Malik and Afridi kept their head cool and steered their team to a win with 10 balls to spare.
Shoaib Malik was the highest scorer for Multan Sultans with 31 runs, while Shan Masood played a steady knock of 26 off 20 deliveries. Whereas, Afridi provided the finishing touch with 16 runs off 8 deliveries.
Shadab Khan was the pick of the bowler for Islamabad United with two wickets to his name, whereas, Waqas Maqsood and Mohammad Sami struck once in the inning.
Earlier, Multan Sultans won the toss and invited Islamabad United to bat first, which turned out to be the right call for them.
It was yet again Luke Ronchi for Islamabad United who dominated with the bat against Multan Sultans’ bowlers. He played an impressive inning of 51 runs off 33 balls. However, none of other Islamabad batters could contribute significantly.
Rizwan Hussain, Cameron Delport, Hussain Talat, Phil Salt and Asif Ali scored 4, 0, 7, 4 and 2 runs respectively. However, Faheem Ashraf and Samit Patel played unbeaten innings of 20 runs, which took United to a fighting total.
The debutante Ali Shafiq bowled brilliantly, he took two wickets for 11 runs in his four overs, which earned him the Man of the Match. Shahid Afridi and Junaid Khan also took two wickets each, while Mohammad Irfan struck once.
