The Sultan of Swing completes half century

Wasim Akram is, perhaps, the greatest left arm fast bowler to grace the game of cricket and today the Sultan of Swing is celebrating his 50th birthday.

Born in Lahore Wasim Akram was always destined to become a great bowler because of his skill and ability to move the ball both ways. He was a clever bowler who had control over swing and seam and when he was on song the fast bowler would bamboozle even the best in the business with his scintillating bowling.

During the course of his career Wasim Akram took 414 wickets in test matches, 502 wickets in ODIs and not to forget over 1000 first class wickets. He was the first bowler to reach the 500 wickets mark in ODIs during the 2003 cricket world cup in South Africa. He was also an able lower order batsman who would prove Pakistan with quick fire knocks down the order to keep his side on track. He also scored a double century against Zimbabwe in a test match at Sheikhupura.

Wasim Akram is also the only bowler to take four hat-tricks during his international career, He has two each in test matches and one day internationals.

When he first burst onto the scene he was seen as a natural successor of the great Imran Khan, who had a role to play in nurturing and upbringing of this great bowler, but controversies including the match fixing scandal marred his career and his career faded away towards the end.

Perhaps one of his greatest achievement was winning the 1992 world cup where he played a major role in helping Pakistan secure the title.

Former and current cricketers have also wished Wasim Akram on his big day and also tons of his followers have joined in as his well wishers.
