Asif Ali smashed 44 runs off 25 balls to help Northern beat Southern Punjab by five wickets in the third match of the National T20 Cup at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad on Monday.
Umar Amin, earlier, provided a positive start to Northern as they chased 136 runs an over before. Umar scored 50 runs.
While batting first, Southern Punjab posted 135-9 on the scoreboard. Their top-order batting completely flopped as they were four down for just 57 runs.
Openers Shan Masood and Umar Siddiq managed to score 8 and 15 runs respectively. Sami Aslam got to just thre runs while Sohaib Maqsood spent some time at the crease and scored 25 runs but Mohammad Nawaz got rid of him.
Aamir Yamin, in the end, took the responsibility and scored 33 runs off 20 balls including four boundaries and a six to help Southern Punjab reach a defendable total.
Sohail Tanvir bagged three wickets while giving away 27 runs in his four overs. Left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir took two wickets.
In reply, Umar provided a solid start to Northern despite losing his opening partner Naved Malik and one down batsman Rohail Nazir for just 17 runs. But he along with Mohammad Nawaz (24) took the team’s score from 17-2 to 80-3 before losing his wicket to leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood.
Asif then stole the limelight with his batting as the right-handed batsman struck three fours and sixes each to finish the things well for his team.
