Sri Lanka has added the uncapped right arm fast bowler Chamika Karunaratne to the Test squad after Lahiru Kumara had been ruled out with an injury during the first Test against Kangaroos.
Kumara suffered a torn hamstring on the second day of the first test in Brisbane, which Sri Lanka lost by an innings and 40 runs, while Chameera has injured his left ankle.
That was a major boost for the Australian team, which recently lost a Test series to India for the first time on home ground.
But Sri Lanka, who recently lost a series 3-0 against New Zealand, now face the unenviable prospect of being swept again.
Both injured bowlers are now returning home, the selectors said in a statement.
The second and final test of the series begins in Canberra on Friday.
