WAPDA beats PIA in the final to win Pakistan Cup

KARACHI: WAPDA won the hockey tournament, Pakistan Cup, defeating PIA in the final on Sunday at Abdul Sattar Edhi Stadium in Karachi.

In front of a large crowd, WAPDA dominated PIA with a score of 4-2 to win the tournament that was organized by ARY as an effort to promote the game in the country.

WAPDA started off the proceedings in the final aggressively and tested PIA’s defense constantly. They ruled the first half by scoring 2 goals, whereas, they conceded a goal as well. WAPDA dominated the second half as well and made the score 4-2.

Tasawwar Iqbal of WAPDA remained the most prolific player of the final by netting the ball twice and taking his team to a well deserved victory.

Pakistan Cup kicked off on August 7 and the final of the tournament took place on the auspicious day of August 14.

The culminating ceremony was attended by Sindh’s newly appointed Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Sindh’s Sports Minister Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar and former Olympian Shahbaz Senior along with the Chairman of ARY Network Haji Iqbal.

WAPDA, the winners of the tournament received Rs. 2 million as prize money, whereas, PIA, the runners up also got Rs. 1 million. NBP also received Rs. 0.5 million.
