Former head coach of Pakistan, Waqar Younis believes that Pakistan can perform better in ODI series against Australia if they play aggressively and there are players who can play modern style of the game.

“We will have to match their aggression,” he said while talking to ARY News. “We played defensive cricket in the first four of the five- match ODI series against England and lost them, we played aggressive in the fifth contest and won it.”

The other part of Two W’s said, “There are Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal and other boys, these freshmen will bring fresh energy in the dressing room, I hope we will perform better.”

The former express pacer, Waqar Younis stated that Pakistan did not perform at their potential during the Test series, they did not live up to the expectations despite of having a solid and experienced unit.

“There were expectations from Pakistan, their side was experienced, they had more depth in their batting, their bowlers were performing consistently but they committed some major mistakes that cost them,” said Waqar.

According to the bowling legend, Pakistan could not play with the same unity as they played against England and somewhat against West Indies.

“We fielded extremely poor, we did not take catches, our ground fielding was below par and it discourages a bowler,” he added.

Talking about Pakistan’s spin-wizard Yasir Shah, the 45-year old expressed displeasure that the leggie neither could take wickets nor he dried up the runs.

“Yasir Shah’s bowling was a great disappointment,” he said. “He did not take wickets, in fact he could not even control the flow of runs.”

“Pakistani bowlers did not bowl as a unit, if one bowler was bowling a good over, the other bowler was leaking runs from the other end,” he highlighted.

However, the former skipper praised Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq’s courageous batting in Australia.

“Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali played very well,” he told. “On the other hand, Misbah Ul Haq and Younis Khan were in good form before heading to Australia but the experienced duo failed to perform.”

Waqar Younis mentioned that the brand of cricket Pakistan played in Australia was the same that they used in UAE, which let them down. The former coach blamed the skipper for poor field placings and lack of planning.

“Misbah is somewhat responsible (for the defeats),” he said. “The style of cricket we play in UAE is not suitable for Australia, we tried to use the same tactics that we use in Sharjah, Dubai or Abu Dhabi.”

“There are different pitches, different bounce, grounds are big, you can’t play here with defensive fields and our bowlers also did not bowl that well too,” he further said.

“Misbah should be criticized for being so defensive and when you are not performing, it demoralizes you as well. You can feel it in the field, Australians made it look in the last Test as if it was a school cricket match,” he added.

The former coach believes that Pakistan have to change their brand of cricket, they have to adopt the modern style of play, the way Australia, South Africa or England are playing.

“We have to change our brand of cricket to win anywhere in the world,” he said. “I have always urged to change the modern style of cricket, if we do not switch our style now and keep playing 1970’s cricket, we will not get positive results.”
