AUCKLAND: Pakistan coach Waqar Younis ended post match press conference after bombarded with questions regarding wicket-keeper batsman Sarfraz Ahmed, who won ‘Man of the Match’ award for brilliant performance but had been out of coach’s favors in the previous four World Cup games.
Sarfraz opened for Pakistan and scored impressive 49 off 49 balls and later took world record equaling six catches behind the wickets and was rightfully awarded ‘Man of the Match’ award. Pakistan recorded a thrilling 29-run victory against pre-tournament favorite South Africa on Saturday.
However, Pakistan started badly in the tournament losing to archrival India by 76 runs; thrashed by mercurial West Indies by 150 runs. Later, they defeated underdogs Zimbabwe narrowly and UAE by 129 runs.
“Will you apologize to the nation for not picking Sarfraz in the first four matches while Pakistan was struggling?” reporters questioned Waqar, who didn’t answer and abruptly ended the press briefing.
