West Indies upsets Australia in ICC U19 World Cup


Nyeem Young showed all-round performance for West Indies as they beat Australia by three wickets in their first match in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa on Saturday.

Nyeem scored 61 runs off 69 balls to help West Indies chase 180 runs target four overs before. He also took a wicket for his team to bag the man-of-the-match award.

While batting first, Australia bowled out for 179 runs. Jak Fraser-McGurk scored highest 84 runs off 97 balls for the boys in yellow. He struck nine boundaries. Wicket-keeper batsman Patrick Rowe made 40 runs off 57 balls laced with six boundaries.


Apart from Young, Jayden Sealed was the pick of the bowlers for West Indies as the right-arm pacer took four wickets for 49 runs. Mathew Forde finished with 3-24.

In reply, Young shined after West Indies lost five wickets for 92 runs. He along with Mathew Forde (23) scored 78 runs together for the sixth wicket.

Tanveer Sangha bagged four wickets for Australia.

On the other hand, Bangladesh outclassed Zimbabwe by nine wickets in a rain-hit contest. The winning side chased 132 runs target according to the D/L method. Pervaiz Hossain played an important role in Bangladesh’s victory by scoring 58 runs off 33 balls. His inning included five boundaries and two sixes.


Earlier, Zimbabwe scored 137-6 with Tadiwanashe Marumani scoring highest 31 runs off 33 balls. Emannuel Bawa made 27 runs.

Tazim Hasan, Shoriful Islam, Mrittunjoy Chowdhry, Shamim Hossain, and Rakibul Hasan bagged a wicket each for Bangladesh.

In another match of the mega event, Aryan Lakra and Figy John led UAE to the eight-wicket victory over Canada. John smashed 102 runs whereas Aryan, who also took two wickets, scored 66 off 92 balls.


Earlier, Canada scored 231-8 with Mihir Patel scoring highest 90 runs off 105 balls.

On Sunday, Pakistan will take on Scotland in their first match in the event while India will play against Sri Lanka.
