MIAMI: Wildcard Daria Gavrilova shocked the world as she defeated World No.2 Maria Sharapova in the second round of the Miami Open on Thursday, ARYSports.tv reports.
Sharapova was behind 3-0 in the second set but made a comeback to make it 4-3 before her serve was broken again by Gavrilova, who emerged into the top-100 this week.
This is Gavrilova’s first appearance in the Miami Open.
“I was probably visualizing beating her (Sharapova) since I was 12 but this was a bit harder than that. I thought I was very composed and just did my best. I was believing”, Gavrilova said.
Sharapova stated that it’s just a sport and she just lost a match.
