World Cup: Ireland survives UAE scare


BRISBANE: Ireland defeated United Arab Emirates by two wickets in their World Cup match at Brisbane on Wednesday, ARY Sports reports.

Ireland won the toss and put UAE into bat.

UAE, batting first, scored 278/9 in their 50 overs. Shaiman Anwar scored 106 runs from 83 balls whereas opener Amjad Ali made 45 runs from 71 balls.

Amjad Javed contributed 42(35) runs with the bat while Khurram Khan scored 36(53) for the team.

Irish bowlers Max Sorensen, Alex Cusack, Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien grabbed two wickets each whereas George Dockrell also took a wicket.

Ireland reached the target of 279 runs in 49.2 overs with two wickers to spare.

Wicket keeper batsman Gary Wilson made 80 runs from 69 balls whereas Kevin O’Brien made 50 off 25 balls.

Captain William Porterfield and Ed Joyce scored 37 runs each.

UAE bowlers Amjad Javed took three wickets whereas Mohammad Naveed and Mohammad Tauqir each grabbed two wickets.

Gary Wilson was named Man of the Match.
