The news of Younis khan’s possible inclusion in the one day squad has been circulating all over the media during the past couple of days but is Younis khan the right choice for ODIs?
Although there is no doubt that Younis khan is Pakistan’s finest test player but his recent run of form in ODIs has not been that great. Younis has scored a mere 226 runs in his last 11 ODI innings and in 2015 he has cored 63 runs in 5 innings at an average of 12.6 and strike rate of 66.3. He has not played an ODI match since the 2015 world cup for Pakistan.
These stats are definitely not working in Khan’s favor and the selectors are perplexed as to weather they should or should not include him in the side. The injury to Haris Sohail has left one slot open in the squad and it remains to be seen weather that position will be filled by Younis khan.
Pakistan’s middle order batting has been a bit fragile as seen in the ODI series versus Zimbabwe which might play in khan’s favor if Pakistan look towards him to provide the stability to the batting order.
Chief selector Haroon Rasheed has flown to Dubai to take everyone in confidence regarding the team selection and to assess any possible recommendations from the tour management committee.
It will be interesting to see weather the selection committee gives chance to new blood in the important series versus England such as the likes of Amir Yamin who impressed one and all with his batting in the second ODI versus Zimbabwe and few other players from the domestic circuit. Also Anwar Ali is fit again and it is highly likely that he will make a comeback in the one day squad.
Pakistan’s squad against England will be announced as soon as Haroon Rasheed returns from Dubai.
