Pakistan defeat Zimbabwe by five wickets in first Twenty20 – a match which marks the return of international cricket in Pakistan after six years – played at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore today.

Opener Mukhtar Ahmed hit his maiden half century during his rapid 45-ball 83 with 12 fours and three sixes to help Pakistan achieve their target in 19.3 overs and take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Earlier, Zimbabwe batting first scored 172-6 with their captain Elton Chigumbura hitting a career best 54. He hit eight boundaries and a six in his 35-ball knock after Zimbabwe won the toss and decided to bat.

Opener Hamilton Masakadza scored 43 while Pakistan‘s recalled paceman Mohammad Sami took three wickets.

Pakistan had not hosted any international cricket since terrorists attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in 2009 forced international teams to refuse tours to Pakistan.

Strict security was put in place with 4,000 policemen on duty but that did not stop the cricket deprived fans to pack the 27,000 capacity stadium.

Match importance with respect to points table

Pakistan are ranked fifth in T20s, seven places above Zimbabwe, and need to win both the matches to retain the spot. A drawn series would mean Pakistan will slip to seventh. Afridi said he was aware of the threat Zimbabwe could pose and was not taking them lightly.

Pitch

The pitch of Gaddafi Stadium considered as batting paradise. It is likely to be a high scoring game. Although, this will be the first international match in the ground after six years of time but its a regular host for domestic competition.

Former Pakistan Cricketer Ramiz Raja giving pitch report said, “It’s a pitch made for batting”, adding that there is nothing for fast bowler in the pitch.
